    RichMatlock's Wookie Vanilla Tank Thread.

    Hi All

Here's the most normal I ever plan to go w.r.t. setting up a DT. It has softies (2 different sinularia) and everything. The algae is intentional as it stops all unwanted SPS from growing and messing up my tank. Algae frags are available to my fellow fans of nasties. I have unsuccessfully attempted introducing majomo (20+ individuals, lasted less than a day) and aptasia (devoured before the rock hits the bottom). I'm emulating a natural system with sand and mud prawns providing the bulk of my filtration.

    Specs are :

    Tank - 1800 x 500 x 600
    Sump - 1400 x 500 x 500
    Lighting - 4 x 4ft Aquamedic T5's
Filtration - deep mud and sand bed
    Extra - 1 Boyu skimmer
    Sump return flow - 3000l/h
    Total tank circ - 5800l/h

    Current Inmates are :
    2 x Picasso trigger
    2 x Convict tangs
    1 x cleaner
    1 x Phoenix damsel
    1 x Solandri Puffer
    1 x Spectacled filefish
    1 x Killerwhale wrasse
    1 x Blue-spot Tamrin wrasse
1 x Coral Banded (fearing for his life)
    2 x Candy shrimp
    (fearing for their lives)

Requests from spaceboy and other gimps for sump pics will be ignored, as they are boring - filtration is internal.

Do you perhaps know if a single killer whale/two tone wrasse will turn to a male if alone in a tank?

Have you had any issues with the 2 convicts? Or have they had issues with each other, is what I actually meant to ask? Do the mud prawns live in sand? How long have you had them?

I've got 4 in my 400 liter, they haven't been in there very long, they only have minor squabbles so far, Convicts are supposed to be the pacifiers of the Surgeon family, almost no blade at the base of their tail fin, so don't think they will cause damage to each other, I suppose it will be best to introduce all of them together though.

The convicts are still the tank's bitches as they are new. The prawns (mud and sand) live in my muddy sandbed and are re-stocked every few weeks as they are mined out by the triggers and others.... I put another 30 in this tank yesterday to restock those munched over the last two weeks as I've been away. I've been running similar systems on all of my tanks for the last few years with great success...

Some changes have been made. I moved the Vanilla DT 50cm to make room for a replacement Grow-Out tank that I got from PeteTheFeet (1.5m x 0.6m x 0.6m). The old one was donated to the Warren clan. I still have to hide the power-heads in each tank (and add some more) and add the new tank's sump as it is currently sharing the Vanilla's. Aaaaanyway, some pics:

It is interesting to note the difference in water appearance between the two systems. Both have the same lighting (2x54W Blue, 2x54W white T5's) and the same water (a bit dirty from the glass clean prior to taking pics). The only difference is the painted backing which makes the new tank look so much "bluer".
