    Colts Setup

    salt3.jpgsalt1.jpgsalt2.jpg
My tank is about a year old and not exactly everyone's cup of tea. Hey, but it's my tank and I like the macroalgae growth. Very low spec tank - 1500 x 450 x 650. Have a sand bed on top which flows into a Carlson surge device. Sump was added merely to increase volume of water. System runs without a protein skimmer and system gets a 100 liter water change when I have time (every 6 weeks or so)
Fish are as follows, 2 clown fish, dragon wrasse, 6 line wrasse, cleaner wrasse, blue tang, 2 x banded shrimp (breed every 3 weeks or so), 2 guppies and a couple of Astrea snails.

All coral are my own cuttings and the colt was one of the first pieces that I cut. Will be adding a lot more mushrooms and zooanthids later this week, when I sort out my propagation tanks (4 by 3000 x 500 x 300H). Also have about 80 Banggai cardinals and am expecting another 100 fry this weekend. Have been keeping marines since August last year and am enjoying the challenge immensely.

Just moved it into your own thread there colt.

Seems the livestock is nice and healthy, but you got a bit of an algae problem there? How about posting your parameters

I like the algae and as you said everthing is healthy. Besides, the algae can be removed in bunches, so is not a problem.

the algae does look great but algae and coral sometimes does not work so great ! often if algae trives it is due to a excess of nutrients and phosphate ,coral does not like this !! so regardless of it looking healthy your parameters may beg to differ

Some of the macro algaes are stunners but my angels don't give them a chance to grow - pity they don't tackle my GHA in the same way
To reef or not to reef? That is not even a question!

thanks Calvin, but don't you also think that all aquarists should get to know their tanks well enough to know what is thriving and what is not. I don't know of any books that will tell you what the exact boundaries are for coral to survive. We only know what the ideal parameters are. One of the reasons that I only used my own cuttings in the tank is that I can experiment with it and if I lose coral it will not be that expensive. So, if I see any slight changes in my coral behavoiur, I will certainly take steps to rectify the matter .
As "Fly" so aptly points out, we learn by trial and error. So in order to understand my hobby better, I also need to know what limits I can push my parameter boundaries to.

Personally I feel if your coral is happy, colourful and growing, then its a job well done. Also, the types of corals you have there do thrive in slightly higher nutrientsI don't know of any books that will tell you what the exact boundaries are for coral to survive. There are numerous references to parameters which when way out of whack will cause problems- eg ALK too high or too low, Pollution levels too high can cause stress on fish and corals etc. Personally I think its important to try and keep your livestock in a "lifestyle" that is most suitable to their needs We only know what the ideal parameters are.As per what Ive just said, yes we do know ideal parameters, but we do also know that excessively high or low levels of certain "parameters" is detrimental to coral and fish health. One of the reasons that I only used my own cuttings in the tank is that I can experiment with it and if I lose coral it will not be that expensive. So, if I see any slight changes in my coral behavoiur, I will certainly take steps to rectify the matter .

Ive responded in red. Colt- have you tested your water parameters?

BTW, congratulations on your successes with Bangaais- well impressive

Got a lot of my algae’s from Colt and must say it is an amazing tank to see. Pushing boundaries maybe, but the stuff he has in there looks great. By the way D would it be ok to pop by this weekend, want to come get some babies, let me know. Mel starting up her Nano again and would love to get one or two more pieces of the lettuce algae.

Second batch of Banggai's which number 64 in total. Fed solely on newly hatched brine shrimp without any HUFA additives. First batch is being fed live daphnia as live brine shrimp is still too small. By feeding daphnia, I am able to get their stomachs to "bulge" to the extent that I can see that they are well fed.
Little fed up today as I finally found a pair of Blue Line Pipe fish, but LFS would not sell them to me as they could not sell them for quite some time and threw them into a little nanno tank. Firstly they didn't even know its a pair and secondly they looked a bit on the thin side and hopefully at some point in time they will start feeding them properly before they die.

Calvin, water parameters are fine except for phosphates and nitrates which I know to be on the high side. Am keeping an eye on them though as I am watching with amazement at their growth rates and I want to try and see whether or not I can get some cuttings to grow in some of the other tanks I have running.
